Bedern Storytime: Maisie’s Magical Christmas and Other Stories

A festive storytelling session with local author, editor, and Cleggs of York shop keeper, Mr. Markes, as he brings his heartwarming children’s book Maisie’s Magical Christmas to life!
Follow Maisie, a crafter who has hurt her arm and can’t make decorations for her Christmas market stall. With only two days to go, who will come to her rescue? This delightful story celebrates friendship, community, and the magic of helping others — perfect for children aged 3 and up.

The Bertie Set is a folk fusion collective which draws on the best world music as well as our own original compositions to create a set of outstanding beauty. Regular members of the group use guitar, fiddle, drums and percussion, mandola, accordion and melodica. And of course the haunting bluesy voice of Bertie herself.
August 29th: Holly Taymar
Holly Taymar is one of those ‘hidden gem’ singer-songwriters hailing from York, UK. All for the love of the song, Holly’s music weaves heartfelt melodies and introspective lyrics that will leave you wanting more.

She will be giving an insight into the reality of the day-to-day lives of the vicars choral showing how, by the later fifteenth century they were having to undertake much more secular activities in addition to singing in the choir of the Minster. Some of which led some of them to behaviours not usually associated with priests.
Please note that Priests, Property and Pleasure explores historical themes that may include mature or sensitive subject matter. This talk may not be suitable for all audiences. Viewer discretion is advised.

As part of The Festival of Archaeology, medieval re-enactors Frei Compagnie take over Bedern Hall for a Living History display. Hand on experiences of medieval food, crafts and arms.

CONNECTING MEDIEVAL YORK WALKING TOUR
Saturday 7th September 11.00am
As part of the national Heritage Open Days, we’ll be opening the Hall and working with our friends across the City to take you on a free walking tour of medieval York connecting Bedern Hall with All Saints North Street and Holy Trinity Goodramgate.
THERE WILL BE 2 TOURS – 11.30AM AND 2.00PM
Will we need a map?! Then we can turn to The Historic Towns Trust who will be joining us with their Atlas and Maps of York created from sources from Medeival time to 1852 when the first Ordnance Survey map was produced.
Meanwhile, back at Bedern, the Guilds who call the Hall their home will be staging exhibitions on their history and the part they’ve played in York’s history.
CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT 2024

Embrace the festive season as a local quartet fills the hall with the sounds of traditional carols, accompanied by a talented small acting troupe presenting heartwarming seasonal readings.
